A Beginner’s Guide To Low Impact Exercise | Worcester Fitness

Sep 14, 2023

You know exercising can boost your health. However, certain limitations might prevent you from running or playing basketball. Low-impact movements offer a body-friendly workout alternative.

Doing activities like walking can significantly improve your quality of life, especially if you’re dealing with chronic medical conditions. Additionally, these activities offer a more gentle workout alternative when needed. Here are some tips to keep your launch into exercise a safe one!

Take care of your joints. One of the main reasons people choose low impact exercise is to protect their joints, bones, and connective tissue. Even if your knees are in good shape, they might appreciate a break from running on sidewalks.

Shed those extra pounds. Carrying excess weight puts stress on your bones. Opt for low impact workouts that help you burn calories and slim down.

Take care of your heart. Numerous studies show that low impact exercise can lower the chances of heart disease. Depending on your fitness level, you can go easy or work on raising your heart rate.

During pregnancy, it’s important to prioritize safety. Your doctor may suggest opting for low impact exercises. The latest guidelines advise healthy pregnant women to aim for at least two and a half hours of aerobic activity each week.

Boost your recovery. Avoid overtraining and injuries by giving yourself days off to rest. You can do Boot Camp classes four times a week and fit in walks or yoga classes in between.

Low-Effort Exercises: Get Inspired!

Any activity that lets you keep one foot on the ground counts as low impact. While it usually means easier workouts, you’ve got plenty of choices and ways to ramp up the intensity.

Hop on a bike. Take a spin on a stationary machine or try a spin class. For an added challenge, tweak the settings or choose a class that includes some uphill segments.

Stationary Rowing Machines are no joke! Not only does it burn around 400 calories, but it also works wonders for your entire body.

Try out yoga, and reap the benefits of both your body and mind. Engaging in yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi can boost your balance, strength, and flexibility, all while enjoying improved mental and physical health.

Hit the gym or grab some dumbbells for resistance training. It builds muscle and increases calorie burn, even during rest. And hey, instead of flipping the channel or fast-forwarding, why not sneak in some pushups during TV commercials?

Go for a swim. Working out in the water is easy on your joints, even when you’re off the ground. That’s because the water gives you support. If you want to mix it up, give aqua aerobics a try.

Try out different types of squats and lunges to make your workouts fun and effective. Some of the most challenging lower body exercises are low impact!

Take the stairs or try using step machines to give your lower body a good workout. Beginners can get adjustable step platforms to use for various exercises.

Amp it up. Your body gets used to the same old routine, so mix it up for better results. One simple trick is to pick up the pace. Adding some arm action can also do the trick.

Adults can easily engage in a range of safe exercises that cater to aging and physical limitations. Have a chat with one of our Personal Trainers about your specific requirements and how low impact workouts can be beneficial.

Worcester Fitness Flyers and YWCA Successfully Raise Funds for Pool Starting Blocks

The Worcester Fitness Flyers organized a swim-a-thon challenge in October 2022 at the YWCA facility, their current practice location. The goal was to raise funds for purchasing starting blocks for the YWCA pool. The challenge attracted 16 swimmers aged 7-15, who solicited donations to reach their goal. They successfully raised enough money for one starting block, with additional funds contributed by Worcester Fitness. In total, five starting blocks were purchased, and Worcester Fitness covered the installation costs with a generous contribution of $20,000.
