Calories You Can Count On
Last night at a local restaurant, I overheard a party of ‘thirty-something’ women talking calories. Huddled around a table, buried in their smart phones, they nervously punched in the calorie counts for fennel salads, pickled radishes, and sides of toasted olive loaf. I swear, I even heard one of them say, “Bikini season is right around the corner, ladies!”
I would be lying if I told you that I have never let myself get caught up in the calorie counting game. In fact, I wrote a post not so long ago about the very same app that these women immersed themselves in at the dinner table. But, there is an inherent problem with the notion that all high calorie foods should be avoided as many of these apps purport. On the contrary, some of the most nutritious choices contain a bounty of calories. This week, Refinery 29 wisely reminds us that a scoop of ice cream and an avocado contain the same amount of calories.
Put down your phones, ladies – skip the bread pudding – help yourself to the quinoa, revel in the peanut butter, drizzle on the olive oil, and break out the mangoes! Make good use of calories you can count on.
