Definition: Metabolic Conditioning workouts, or MetCons for short, are fast paced, high intensity workouts completed in a short period of time that will challenge your cardiovascular capacity, put your metabolism into overdrive and rapidly burn fat.
The words “metabolic conditioning” mean different things to different groups or fitness facilities. It may mean something as simple as interval training while somewhere else it may consist of a complex circuit of kettlebells, rope slams, TRX and medicine ball work.
So what types of workouts are most effective and what are the benefits of such training protocols? The effectiveness of MetCon is determined by the specificity on the work to rest ratios. The higher the work load (sprinting) the longer the recovery period. The longer the work load (aerobics) the shorter the resting phase. The key is finding out exactly what you are trying to improve. Do you want to be a better endurance athlete or is it your wish to maximize your bench press numbers or sprint a 10-15 yard shuttle run?
