Understanding AS

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neuro-genetic disorder that occurs in one in 15,000 live births. AS is often misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy or autism. Characteristics of the disorder include developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders. Individuals with Angelman syndrome will require life-long care.

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation website is the best place to keep abreast of current information regarding research, education, general information and therapies for Angelman syndrome.

15-40 Connection

53 Otis Street P.O. Box 1153 Westboro, MA 01581

(508)869-5200

Cancer survival rates in teens and young adults (ages 15 to 40) have barely improved since 1975 in a large part because a delay in diagnosis allows time for cancer to progress to more advanced stages. The 15-40 Connection is changing this by empowering individuals with knowledge that will save and improve lives through early cancer detection. Think about it… most people know that early cancer detection works but don’t know how to make it work for them. We can change this through the knowledge that cancer symptoms are often subtle but persistent changes in your health.

How small signs can lead to delayed diagnosis:

  • Not understanding what a symptom can look or feel like
  • Not recognizing or benchmarking your normal health by getting a physical
  • Being embarrassed by symptoms and not telling your doctor about them
  • Not trusting yourself when your instincts tell you something more is wrong
  • Not being heard because your doctor minimizes your symptoms.
